See’s Candies is a chocolate from California, USA. Mr. Makoto Suzuki (2nd year doctoral student) who had been studying for 3 months at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California gave us a souvenir. Thank you. He was nice enough to ask me if there is anything I missed from USA. Because of that, I reminiscence my Scripps polo shirt which I threw away a long time ago. So, I asked for See’s Candies because it is so nostalgic. He sent me “candy” instead but I actually wanted chocolate. Apparently, it is available now in Omotesando and Ginza.
It is not really delicious but its America! This chocolate is one of my favorite products when I came to the United States where I can eat fresh fruits and sweet stuffs.
About 11 years ago, I thought that I have never been abroad so I was a bit worried. I then asked help from my colleague Shoji, who was an assistant professor at the time working at a venture pharmaceutical company in San Diego to have a homestay at his home for a week. I did not know that after two months, I will be flying to San Diego. At that time, these See’s Candies were so popular that I bought in large quantities as souvenirs. An all favorite souvenirs when studying abroad.
Eventually, as a postdoctoral fellow who went to San Diego and spent a good life in San Diego for a year. I was then appointed as an assistant professor in Nagoya and took it as a souvenir to Nagoya. It was the best souvenir sold at the airport (bitter smile) so I frequently bought it. I feel so nostalgic. Ten years ago, I spent three years doing my doctoral course. It was when I started thinking about D theory while thinking about the life of a postdoctoral researcher.
I missed the days (bitter smile) of writing two books on elements and engineers for a month while saying to my teacher, “I’m writing D theory!” Did I expect myself to be like this 10 years after? I am glad that I decide to be independent.
To the best times of my old days while eating See’s Candies. Cheers to you, Ma-kun!
