Title: Simplifying Synthesis with Radical Cross Coupling
Phil S. Baran is an organic chemist at Scripps Research. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from New York University in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute in 2001 under the supervision of Professor K. C. Nicolaou. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research with Professor E. J. Corey at Harvard University. In 2003, he joined Scripps Research as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2008, and became a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology in 2009. His current research focuses on the development of practical and efficient strategies for the synthesis of complex natural products and biologically active molecules, including radical chemistry, decarboxylative cross-coupling, and synthetic electrochemistry.
Professor Baran is visiting Japan on the occasion of receiving the Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award, and our university is the only university he will visit during this trip. In this lecture, he will present reaction-design strategies that use radical cross-coupling to simplify organic synthesis, together with their applications to complex molecule synthesis and drug discovery. We warmly invite you to join us for this rare opportunity to experience cutting-edge research in synthetic organic chemistry from one of the field’s leading scientists.
