Story of Solvents

Hi its been a long time. this is Hoshi from B4.

This time, I decided to write about the solvents often used in organic chemistry.

The reason why I am talking about this is that I have suffered several times because I did not know the physical properties of the solvent.

(I once had the mistake of mixing DMSO once and have asked myself how I was going to remove it …)

So, this time I would like to focus on the boiling point of the solvents.

In organic chemistry, after a reaction, treatment almost always involves concentration.

In other words, the solvent is removed using an evaporator.

The principle is very simple and the solvent is volatilized by raising and lowering the pressure but this can be quite troublesome.

If the decompression is too weak, the solvent will remain and if it is too strong, it will cause a sudden boiling.

Therefore, we often do things such as judging the right pressure reduction from the boiling point of the solvent.

There is such a table on the desk of Mr. Takahara sitting next to me, which is very convenient and helpful.

Now, it is not interesting to list the boiling points of various solvents here, so I tried a quiz format.

The difficulty is due to my own judgement and prejudice, please forgive me. How much do you know about the boiling point of solvents?

1. Beginner edition: Solvents that are frequently removed, I would like to know the approximate boiling point

  • Ethyl acetate
  • Hexane
  • ethanol
  • Dichloromethane (DCM)
  • Chloroform
  • Tetrahydrofuran (THF)
  • Diethyl ether

2. Middle edition: Is the boiling point a blind spot unexpectedly?

  • acetone
  • Acetonitrile
  • Isopropanol (IPA)
  • N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF)
  • Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)
  • 1,4-dioxane
  • benzene
  • toluene

3. Advanced edition: As I can see it, a few people only remember the boiling point

  • 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE)
  • N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)
  • Pyridine
  • 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME)
  • Carbon tetrachloride
  • Hexamethyl phosphate triamide (HMPA)

4. Maniac edition: Does anyone remember the boiling point?

  • N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)
  • Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)
  • Dibutyl ether
  • Isobutyl alcohol

(By the way, the bottom two were actually the solvents that I struggled to remove)

To what degree you got it right? Please check the exact value.

This time it was  more about organic chemistry so I will introduce dinner again soon.
